Brain or Mind, controlling You?

 Brain or Mind, Controlling You?

We, humans are made of a complex system that controls the entire mechanism of human body operation. We have small computer hardware with neural level networking system that helps us to functions effectively. Quoting from Live Science online blog, the human brain is the largest part of all vertebrates compared to the body size and at average the human brain weighs about 1.5 kilograms. According to John Hopkins Medicine blog, the brain is a soft mass of sensitive and protective tissues as well as nerves connected to the spinal cord. These 3 tissues form the central nervous system. For simple understanding, the brain has six main parts – cerebrum, cerebellum and spinal cord. The brain controls your ability to think, communication, movement and sensory system based activities.

It keeps us being alive by conducting controllable and uncontrollable activities. In other words, the controllable activities are those activities involve abstract thinking; judgmental, past-present-future analysis, setting goals and evaluate the results. Controllable activities are controlled by the conscious mind. The conscious mind makes someone to be in volitional behaviour. It allows someone to create the desire to achieve something they intended to experience. The uncontrollable activities are automated through the subconscious mind such as breathing, digestion, heart beat and many more.

Sigmund Freud (1900, 1905) produced a topographical model of human mind and in this model he described the features of the mind’s structure and how it functions. Most popular description was using the analogy of an iceberg in the sea. Freud advocated that there are three levels of mind – conscious mind, preconscious mind and unconscious mind. The visible above sea lining iceberg represents the conscious mind where thoughts or impulses are created through the sensory system.

Topographical Model of Human Mind by Sigmund Freud

Conscious Mind

The conscious mind consists all of the thoughts, memories, feelings, desires, and wishes. Freud (1915) described the conscious mind which comprises all the mental processes which we are aware. You decide when you are hungry or you decide to get a drink when you feel thirsty.

Preconscious Mind

The preconscious mind is the virtual waiting room. In the iceberg analogy, preconscious mind is the layer just below the sea-lining which consists of encoded and retrievable memories. To be precise, preconscious mind is the storage location of any thoughts or feelings which you are not aware and easily slick into conscious mind (Freud, 1924).

Unconscious Mind

The most significant and important of these three minds is the unconscious mind. It governs the real human behaviour. Unconscious mind is also called as subconscious mind. Our current feelings and decisions are highly influenced by our past experiences and impacts generated from those decisions are embedded in our unconscious mind. We are clueless of the type of information stored in our unconscious mind. The unconscious mind contains all kinds of relevant, significant and disturbing memories which we need to keep away from it. Storing any events triggered or disturbed us emotionally. Our unconscious mind is our protector, protecting us to maintain the status quo. When you try to change your habits or your behavioural pattern your unconscious mind will navigate you back to your safe zone by making you to feel uneasy uncomfortable. Unconscious mind is the root of imagination and creativity as well the creation habit.

 "Whatever your mind can

conceive and believe,

it can achieve."

Conditioning Your Mind

Conditioning our mind it's not easy neither it's difficult. A continuous and consistent practise would allow you to learn how the mind works. Once you learn how the mind works, you will be able to control it and subsequently you can focus it. If you don't understand how your mind works you cannot control, focus and concentrate your mind. One of the best example is in countries huge elephants are tied with small tiny ropes. These huge elephants will be moving within the length of those ropes. How it happened? These elephants were tied with ropes when they were young and they were not strong enough to bring the ropes. Since then their minds had conditioned that they cannot break the ropes. This a typical example of mind conditioning. There many more such as individual preferences, likes and dislikes and habits.

However, there are way which you can learn to control and train your mind. One of the program which I would like to recommend to you is the a program by John Kehoe. Mind Power is a powerful 6 Laws of the Mind. Watch the video below for better understanding.
