The truth behind how important a good sleep is not being realized by many. Even though lots of people think sleeping well is important but many are not giving it a priority. Good Sleep is important for everyone and it helps to rejuvenate your body. Getting adequate sleeping helps to ensure mental well-being. Good sleep is having deep sleep for average of 8 hours of sleep. However, there are people having sleeping difficulty at night such as hard to fall asleep or wake up several times at night.

According to a survey by American Sleep Association, 50 to 70 million American adults have a sleep disorder. This number might be gradually increasing due work -life stress and other emotionally affected disorders. Another study shows that on average an American sleep 6.8 hours per day. The sleep time had reduced from 7.9 hours (1942). Shockingly, 43% of employed American adults get less than 6 hours of sleep. Surprisingly, 45% Americans claim that poor sleep has made an impact on their daily life at least once in the last 7 days. The impact of poor sleeping time would result in the work performance or efficiency in managing work-life stress.

In a study conducted by Amlife International (2018) found that average Malaysians sleep only 6.3 hours every day and 9 in 10 people suffer from one or more sleep problems. There two high percentage sleeping problems Malaysians do face - 46% waking in the middle of the night and 32 feeling tired and unrest in the morning. On the reason of sleeping problems, 52% responded that they are facing stress, anxiety and depression however, 34% stated that they have unhealthy lifestyle and sleep habits. The effects from the sleep problem ranging from headache, fatigue, trouble in thinking and concentration, shoulder and neck pain and mood swings. Many people do face problems due in work efficiency as they might feel lethargic during working hours. More people might be facing sleep problem nowadays, as we are going through lockdown due to pandemic Covid-19.

Findings show that 40% of Malaysians do not know the solution when faced with sleep disorders and 33% are not acknowledging the problem. Perhaps, they do not realize on the problems they are facing. Even though, 1 in 10 Malaysian is not aware that poor sleep could lead to health issues but 9 in 10 Malaysians are aware on this factor. Apparently, 47.2% are suffering from insomnia or chronic insomnia.

According to Dr. Laura Palagini, a psychiatrist from University of Pisa, Italy that quality sleep is one of the three pillars of good health along with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Suffering from sleep disorders, could impact health and can trigger psychological conditions like depression, anxiety and psychosis.

Failure in treating sleep problem would lead to chronic sleep problems. Ultimately, your quality of life will be affected. Possibly, sleep problem may also deprive your performance levels on the job as well as reducing the strength of your immune system.

Many people think and understand that sleep problem can generate other problems directly or indirectly. The research identified five problems which people think could emerge due to sleep problem such as health related problems, affects emotions and mental focus, develop mood swings, decrease in productivity and causes skin problems.

Scientifically proven that emotions are controlled by the limbic system. It controls the behavioral and emotional responses. The limbic system is an interconnected structures situated deep within the brain. This system has four components which are hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala and limbic cortex. Mainly, hypothalamus is responsible for controlling emotional responses as well as sexual responses, release of hormone and modulating body temperature. Uncontrolled responses can cause anxiety and increases stress which makes people difficult to get quality sleep.

One particular neurotransmitter called GABA (Gamma aminobutyric acid) helps with feelings of anxiety, stress and fear. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter as it functions to block or inhibit certain brain signals and reduces activity of the nervous system. Insufficient of GABA can cause difficulty to sleep. Insufficient amount of melatonin in the body can also make someone to face lacking in quality sleep. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain which operates like a clock alarming you on the time to sleep.
